The SSC CGL exam is conducted in four tiers – Tier I, Tier II, Tier III, and Tier IV. Tier I and Tier II are conducted online, while Tier III is a descriptive paper that is conducted offline. Tier IV is a computer proficiency test (CPT)/data entry speed test (DEST), which is conducted in some cases.

SSC CGL Tier I Exam Pattern:

 

The SSC CGL Tier I exam is a computer-based test that consists of 100 multiple choice questions (MCQs). The exam is conducted for a total duration of 60 minutes. The subjects that are covered in the Tier I exam are:

 

General Intelligence and Reasoning

General Awareness

Quantitative Aptitude

English Comprehension

The SSC CGL Tier I exam will have a negative marking of 0.50 marks for each wrong answer.

 

SSC CGL Tier II Exam Pattern:

 

The SSC CGL Tier II exam is also a computer-based test that consists of four papers – Paper I, Paper II, Paper III, and Paper IV. Paper I and Paper II are compulsory for all candidates, while Paper III is for candidates who have applied for the post of Statistical Investigator Gr. II and Paper IV is for candidates who have applied for the post of Assistant Audit Officer/Assistant Accounts Officer.

 

The exam is conducted for a total duration of 120 minutes for each paper. The subjects that are covered in the Tier II exam are:

 

Paper I: Quantitative Ability

Paper II: English Language and Comprehension

Paper III: Statistics (for the post of Statistical Investigator Gr. II)

Paper IV: General Studies (Finance and Economics) (for the post of Assistant Audit Officer/Assistant Accounts Officer)

The SSC CGL Tier II exam will have a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in Paper I, Paper III, and Paper IV. For Paper II, the negative marking will be 0.50 marks for each wrong answer.

 

SSC CGL Tier III Exam Pattern:

 

The SSC CGL Tier III exam is a descriptive paper that is conducted offline. The exam consists of essay writing, letter/application writing, and precis writing. The total duration of the exam is 60 minutes, and the total marks allotted for the exam is 100.

 

SSC CGL Tier IV Exam Pattern:

 

The SSC CGL Tier IV exam is a computer proficiency test (CPT)/data entry speed test (DEST) that is conducted in some cases. The test is conducted for candidates who have applied for the post of Tax Assistants (Central Excise and Income Tax). The test is also conducted for candidates who have qualified for the post of Assistant Section Officer in CSS and MEA.

 

The CPT will assess the proficiency of candidates in Word Processing, Spreadsheets, and Generation of Slides. The DEST will assess the typing speed of candidates. The total duration of the test is 45 minutes.
