What are respiratory system infections and their causes?

Humans breathing at times symbolizes life. When a person is still breathing then such a person is still alive; However, the organs and structures that support breathing can be affected by some infections or diseases which then cause damage or partial breakdown of such organs. These infections or diseases include common cold, Influenza, Pneumonia, Tuberculosis, Asthma, Chronic Respiratory Diseases (CRDs).

Common Cold: The common cold is a mild infection of the nasal cavity and occurs when the nasal cavity is damaged by viruses such as rhinoviruses or adenoviruses. Symptoms caused by the viruses involve coughing, excessive sneezing, sore throat, runny nose, and fever. The viruses contaminate the mucus and infect the cooler tissues in the nasal cavities, which then trigger inflammatory reactions in the body. These viruses can be contagious or infectious through one droplet of mucus.

Influenza (flu): The flu is caused by an orthomyxovirus that affects the lower respiratory tract. Symptoms caused by the virus involve coughing, body aches, fever, and chills. The flu can be subtle if treated in an early stage time and can be managed after a few days. However, if it is not well in the early stage, it can cause deadly complications such as liver and brain swelling, lung damage, and pneumonia, depending on the age and health of the person.

Pneumonia: Pneumonia is a lung infection which is caused by influenza viruses, adenoviruses, and respiratory syncytial viruses. It can also be affected by a bacterial infection. It is more common among infants and small children. Pneumonia symptoms are similar to the general cold and flu.

Tuberculosis: Active tuberculosis mainly affects the lungs and is caused by mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is a mostly contagious disease that spreads through the air. Contaminated droplets through cough or sneezing of an infected person can easily spread the disease to the other person.

Asthma: Asthma is a common respiratory infection among people which is the recurrent attacks of short breaths and wheezing caused by an obstructed airway. It can occur during physical activity or at sleeping time.

Chronic Respiratory Diseases (CRDs): This is a group of common respiratory diseases that affects the lung structure and other respiratory organs close to it. We have occupational lung diseases, pulmonary hypertension, and asthma in this group of issues.

Conclusion
