The application of an engineer who is applying for CPEng status in New Zealand has to go through a six-stage process. Let’s know the whole process.
Application process:
- Eligibility:
The eligibility to apply to become a Chartered Professional Engineer is you need to have a Washington Accord-accredited qualification (in New Zealand, it is an accredited 4-year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) )or be able to prove equal knowledge.
- Preparation:
It usually consumes between four and six years to attain a sufficient amount of experience to be ready to apply for Chartership. To fulfill the minimum standard for registration, demonstrate that you are capable of practicing competently in your practice area to the level of a reasonable professional engineer.
- Apply online:
Engineering New Zealand conducts first-time Chartered assessments during defined periods throughout the year. The list of applicants in upcoming assessment rounds is available on its official website.
- Validation:
One of its Competence Assessment Advisors will check the information you have given and will aim to give you feedback within 10 working days. They will tell you if you are required to make any changes before your application is sent to Assessment Panel.
- Assessment:
On the finalization of your application, an assessment panel will be assigned to you. They will review your application over 8 to 10 weeks and as a part of this, may meet with you for a discussion about it too.
- Decision:
Your advisor will tell you about the proposed outcome of your application. If positive, your name will appear on its Find an engineer public register. If your application is not successful or the CAB made an alternative decision, you will have the chance to respond.

- You must ensure that your work and CPD records are up-to-date.
- Become familiar with the assessment criteria.
- Talk to those who have gone through this process before.
- Don’t forget to write in the first person, for example, use ‘I’ ‘my’, or ‘me’.
