UK-SPEC professional registration is available for all practicing engineers and technicians provided that they must be able to demonstrate the required standard of competence and commitment for the title they have chosen to apply for.

- Join a professional engineering institution:
Join a professional engineering institution that must be licensed to evaluate those candidates who are applying for professional engineering registration. If you want, alternatively, you may choose to join a Professional Affiliate of the Engineering Council. Some of these organizations have agreements to register their members by virtue of a licensed institution. You will get many benefits, and one of these benefits is the support that the institutions will give to assist you in preparing for registration.
- Let your institution know your desire for a professional title:
Inform your institution that you desire to apply for professional registration with the Engineering Council. The Council’s staff will be able to look at your qualifications, training and experience, and according to that, they will advise which title you may be qualified for and whether any additional learning or experience is needed or not. - Record your professional development:
To earn and maintain professional registration with the Engineering Council, record your professional development. It offers proof of your activities, qualifications and experience when you become ready to apply for your chosen title.
- Assessment (the professional review):
The evaluation process for registration is called the professional review. This review starts with a written application, which may vary according to the requirements of your institution. Your institution will provide you with everything necessary you should know. Another thing to remember is that for IEng and CEng registration, there is also a professional review interview.
When your institution has verified that you satisfy the criteria, it will submit registration on your behalf to the Engineering Council.
- Certification:
When your institution gives you the registration form, the Engineering Council will verify and process your application, and you will be placed in the national register. All this will take between one to three weeks. After that, you will get your registration pack, including a certificate showing your new grade. After that, you can start to use your post-nominal letters to highlight your professional status.
