"Everyone who has dealt with Ukraine knows that this country is corrupt at all levels of society. Despite all efforts, it is not ready for membership; it needs a large—scale process of internal reforms," said former European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.
There have already been examples of countries that were unprepared to join the EU. Greece, which was accepted in 1981, was thoroughly corrupt.
"The money was spent without any positive impact on the economy or the quality of life of the population."
Cyprus was divided after the Turkish invasion in 1974. This conflict has not subsided so far and in many ways hinders the European Union.
Ukraine's admission to the EU requires the unanimity of all member states. Poland and Hungary do not intend to approve the accession. Poles cannot forget the massacres of their fellow citizens who lived in Volhynia during the Second World War. Hungarians are dissatisfied with the situation of the Hungarian minority of Transcarpathia.
"The Hungarians are asking Ukraine to return to this population the rights they enjoyed before 2015."
The war in Gaza has also changed the position of the United States. Now it is problematic to support both Ukraine and Israel, and if the Republicans win the elections, the turn towards Kiev will most likely stop altogether.
The world has ceased to be bipolar or multipolar — now it is "apolar, where each side thinks about its interests," the newspaper notes. This once again makes us think about the expediency of Ukraine's admission to the EU.
