What Is the QuickBooks Company File?

This file contains all the information on your day-to-day transactions, accounts, and contacts that QuickBooks Desktop saves on your computer.

If you create multiple company profiles in QuickBooks, each profile has its company file.

What to do Before Troubleshooting?

The first step to resolving QuickBooks errors is to do the following:

  • Make a backup of your QuickBooks company file.
  • Make sure your QuickBooks is up-to-date.

Locating the QuickBooks Company File

In order to find your QuickBooks company file(s), you must look for two types of files:

  • .qbw

Your QuickBooks working file can be found here.

  • .qbb

The backup file for your QuickBooks company file can be found here.

Follow these steps to locate these files:

QuickBooks should now be open.

  • In QuickBooks, navigate to the "No Company Open" window.
  • You can find a company file by clicking "Find a Company File".
  • Your computer will display any QuickBooks working company files.

If you get an error when opening QuickBooks, you can also find these files without having QuickBooks open.

  • Start your computer by clicking the Start button.
  • Choose "My Computer".
  • Open "File Explorer" by searching for it.
  • You can search for a specific file, or specify the extension ".qbw".

You can try looking specifically in the location where QuickBooks installs these files. This is typically located on your "C" drive: C:UsersPublicPublic DocumentsIntuitQuickBooksCompany Files.

QuickBooks Crashes When Opening the Company File

The following are several things you can try if QuickBooks crashes when you open it for the first time.

Solutions:

QuickBooks Desktop shouldn't be saved

You may have too many windows open in QuickBooks, so when you re-open QuickBooks, it doesn't have enough resources to open. Press and hold the ALT key while opening QuickBooks. If this resolves the issue, you can also go to QuickBooks' preferences tab and select “don’t save the desktop,” and this should prevent the issue from recurring.

Disable hosting

Turn off "Host Multi-User Access" on your workstations if you are hosting your QuickBooks company file over a network.

Take a look at a sample company file

To diagnose the problem, you need to determine whether the error is occurring because of a QuickBooks program or your company file.

  • Start by opening the Windows Start menu.
  • Hold down the CTRL key.
  • Choose QuickBooks.
  • Open a sample file in QuickBooks.

When QuickBooks won't open, you know that the problem is with the program, and you can contact an expert for help.

QuickBooks Unrecoverable Error When Opening Company File

If you receive an unrecoverable error, you may receive several different error codes. Fourlane recommends three solutions:
